But did you know that many states also have <strong>small necessities leave (SNL)<\/strong> laws to allow time off for activities not covered under the FMLA? <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This type of leave varies from state to state, but it includes everything from attending school conferences to caring for elderly relatives. Business owners are responsible for understanding coverage details &mdash; and for developing policies that accommodate the many different time-off situations, without impacting employment status.\r\nFor example, the Massachusetts Small Necessities Leave Act (SNLA) grants an FMLA-eligible employee a total of 24 hours of unpaid leave during any 12-month period, in addition to any leave the employee was entitled to under the FMLA, to participate in school activities directly related to the educational advancement of a son or daughter.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"incopy-image\"> <img src=\"https:\/\/www.hrdirectapps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/What-Is-Family-Leave.jpg\" class=\"img-responsive\"> <\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>Several other states offer SNL for school activities, but for different allowable hours:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Nevada \u2013 4 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>North Carolina \u2013 4 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>Illinois \u2013 8 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>Rhode Island \u2013 10 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>Louisiana \u2013 16 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>Minnesota \u2013 16 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>DC \u2013 24 hours<\/li>\r\n<li>Vermont \u2013 24 hours <\/li>\r\n<li>California \u2013 40 hours <\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<h2>Big Relief for Small Necessities<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>SNL policies are designed to cover absences not specified by other employee time-off provisions, such as bereavement, sick leave or maternity leave.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"incopy-image\"> <img src=\"https:\/\/www.hrdirectapps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/FMLA-Time-Off.jpg\" class=\"img-responsive\"> <\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2>The typical types of absences include:<\/h2> \r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Routine health care (taking children or elderly relatives to medical or dental appointments, such as mammograms, vaccinations or blood tests, or elder-care services)<\/li>\r\n<li>School-related activities (attending educational programs or parent-teacher conferences at a child\u2019s school)<\/li>\r\n<li>Blood, marrow or organ donations <\/li>\r\n<li>Family illness (caring for a sick or injured child, or a relative recovering from surgery or any other mental or medical condition that requires constant in-home care)<\/li>\r\n<li>Community service obligations (such as participation in a civic club, community organization or community-based educational group as a committee member, officer or volunteer (participation in political or religious activities may be excluded)<\/li>\r\n<li>Non-medical family responsibilities (such as caring for aging parents, helping settle parents&rsquo; estates upon death, relocating children into school or visiting family members in places that require extensive travel time)<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"smartTip row\">\r\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 \">\r\n<img class=\"img-responsive\" id=\"Did You Know?\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hrdirectapps.com\/blog\/wp-content\/themes\/hrdirectapps\/images\/did-you-know.jpg\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 smartTipContent\"> Only ten states currently offer paid sick leave: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2>Provisions of SNL Coverage<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>SNL is generally unpaid leave, but like the FMLA, employees may use accrued paid time off to cover absences &mdash; or employers may require them to do so.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In addition, small necessity leave policies are typically subject to:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Advance notice (up to seven days&rsquo; notice, or for emergency or unforeseeable events, &ldquo;as soon as is practical&rdquo;)<\/li>\r\n<li>Written notification (requests for leave provided in writing, sometimes using a specific form)<\/li>\r\n<li>Supervisor approval (the request for leave may need to be approved by an immediate supervisor).
